Sambal Tofu Recipe
Ingredients
For the Sambal Tofu:
- 1 block 14 oz firm tofu, cubed
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 small onion thinly sliced
- 3 cloves garlic minced
- 2-3 tbsp vegetarian sambal or adjust to taste
- 1 tbsp tamarind paste
- 1 tbsp brown sugar or palm sugar
- Salt to taste
- Chopped cilantro for garnish
For Serving:
- Cooked rice
Instructions
- Preparing the Tofu: Start by draining the tofu and pressing out any excess water. Cut the tofu into cubes.
- In a skillet or non-stick pan, heat about 1 tbsp of vegetable oil over medium-high heat.
- Add the tofu cubes to the skillet and cook until they are golden brown on all sides. This will take about 8-10 minutes. Once done, remove the tofu from the skillet and set aside.
- Making the Sambal Sauce: In the same skillet, heat another tbsp of vegetable oil over medium heat.
- Add the thinly sliced onion and sauté until it becomes soft and translucent.
- Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
- Add the vegetarian sambal to the skillet. The amount can be adjusted based on your preferred level of spiciness.
- Dissolve the tamarind paste in about 2 tbsp of warm water and add it to the skillet.
- Stir in the brown sugar or palm sugar and cook the mixture for a few minutes until the flavors meld and the sauce thickens.
- Combining Tofu and Sambal: Return the cooked tofu cubes to the skillet and gently toss them with the sambal sauce until they are well coated.
- Season the sambal tofu with salt to taste. Adjust the sweetness and spiciness to your preference by adding more sugar or sambal.
- Serving: Once the tofu is heated through and coated with the sambal sauce, remove the skillet from the heat.
- Serve the vegetarian sambal tofu over cooked rice.
- Garnish with chopped cilantro for added flavor and freshness.
- Enjoy your delicious and spicy vegetarian sambal tofu!
