Vegan Chicago Hot Dog
Growing up in Illinois, I have fond memories of going into Chicago for Cubs games, cultural events, or a day of shopping in the big city. And when I was a kid, going into Chicago meant that I got to eat my favorite thing: a Chicago hot dog. This is a street snack that holds fond memories for me, even if I have tweaked the recipe to reflect my vegan lifestyle. This is an easy dish to make vegan, since the heap of vegetables are what define it anyway (in Chicago, they would say the hot dog has been dragged, “through the garden”). For a truly authentic Chicago dog, be sure to use a (vegan) poppy seed bun! And of course, no ketchup allowed. Just kidding, you do you. I’ll only judge a little bit.
Ingredients
- 4 vegan hot dog buns
- 4 vegan hot dogs
- 1 cup sport peppers or pickled jalapeños
- 1 cup diced tomatoes
- 1/2 cup chopped white onion
- 1/4 cup sweet pickle relish
- 4 dill pickle spears
- Yellow mustard to taste
- Celery salt to taste
Instructions
- Grill the vegan hot dogs according to package instructions or on a stovetop grilling pan. Cook until they have a nice, slightly crispy exterior.
- While the hot dogs are cooking, chop the onions, dice the tomatoes, and set out the sport peppers (or pickled jalapeños), sweet pickle relish, and dill pickle spears.
- Lightly toast the vegan hot dog buns on the grill or in a toaster.
- Place each grilled vegan hot dog in a bun. Add yellow mustard to taste, then top with onions, tomatoes, sport peppers (or pickled jalapeños), sweet pickle relish, and a dill pickle spear.
- Finish each Chicago-style vegan hot dog by sprinkling a pinch of celery salt on top.
- Serve the vegan Chicago-style hot dogs immediately, and enjoy the plant-based twist on this classic dish!
