Aloha from the less-traveled paths of Hawaii’s Big Island! On my latest culinary and cultural exploration, I swapped my chef’s knife for snorkels and hiking boots. Today, I’m taking you along on an unforgettable virtual journey to some of Big Island’s most secluded beaches—sanctuaries far from the usual tourist paths. If you, like me, crave spots where nature resonates loudly and crowds whisper, keep reading!
Exploring the Untouched Beauty of Papakōlea Green Sand Beach: How to Get There and What to Expect
Imagine a beach where the sand sparkles with olivine crystals, casting a surreal green luminescence. That’s Papakōlea, one of the world’s rare green sand beaches. Tucked away near the southern tip of the Big Island, accessing it is an adventure on its own. You can hike, drive a 4WD, or take a guided tour from the parking area near South Point. I opted for the nearly 3-mile hike, captivated by the expansive views of the rugged coastline every step of the way!
Reaching the beach, the striking contrast of green sand against deep blue water is truly stunning. Surrounded by towering cliffs, the beach provides a secluded atmosphere. Remember to pack essentials—water, snacks, and sun protection—as there are no amenities here. It’s the perfect spot for those who find solace in solitude and unspoiled beauty.
Unveiling Pōhūe Bay: Accessing One of Big Island’s Most Secluded Shores
Pōhūe Bay, often overlooked even by locals, ranks as one of the most secluded spots I’ve visited. The journey here is challenging—it involves navigating a rugged lavascape trail, so sturdy hiking shoes and plenty of water are necessities. Due to its remoteness and difficult access, reaching Pōhūe Bay feels like venturing into uncharted territory.
Upon arrival, the isolation pays off with pristine shores and chances to encounter wildlife, including the occasional Hawaiian Monk Seal. The bay’s waters are crystal clear, making it ideal for snorkeling on calm days. The absence of crowds allows you to truly connect with nature, listening to the waves and perhaps enjoying the beach almost to yourself—a truly rare luxury!
Makalawena Beach Magic: Journeying to a Hidden Paradise
Makalawena Beach offers a hidden sanctuary, accessible only by a rough lava trail or by boat. This moderately challenging trek from the parking lot at Kekaha Kai State Park takes about 20 minutes over uneven terrain, so good footwear and preparation are essential. But believe me, the rewards are worth every effort.
Upon arrival, you’re greeted by pristine white sands, dotted with ironwood trees, and gentle waves—perfect for a refreshing swim. The series of secluded coves provides ample space to find a private spot to unwind. It’s an excellent place for a vegan picnic—I packed tropical fruit wraps with mango, pineapple, and a drizzle of coconut cream in a soft tortilla—absolutely divine! Here, you truly feel distanced from civilization, ensconced in a real-life paradise.
